Over Valentine’s Day weekend, four couples I know announced their engagement on Facebook. I too added a life event to my Facebook feed. It read: “My boyfriend made me ice-cream with chunks of cinnamon roll in it. Life will never be the same.” There are all kinds of life events that warrant a celebratory reaction. This video from Above Average imagines a world where announcing your divorce got as much of an excited reaction as announcing an engagement does.
Two couples sit together at dinner discussing the movie Jurassic World, when one of the couples says they have a big announcement to make. The woman waves her bare ring finger in the air and everyone gasps in happy surprise. The woman in the other couple says, “Everyone has been wondering when this was going to happen. I mean, you guys have been unhappily married for what, like, eight years?” The soon-to-be single man replies, “Yeah, eight long years.”
The married man says, “Now my mom is going to be asking when are you two going to be getting divorced. Tick-tock, tick-tock, you know." His wife adds. "I'm not getting any younger.” Than everyone agrees that because the married couple was originally friends with the soon-to-be-divorced woman, they’ll probably never see the soon-to-be-ex-husband ever again. The ex-husband leaves the table saying, “I will see you guys never, and I will see you at the attorney’s office.” His soon to be ex wife says “I can’t wait, it’s going to be the happiest day of my life.”
I have a couple of friends that are divorced and they are definitely better on the other side. So yeah, sometimes divorce does warrant some excitement!
Bonus info: According to Huffington Post, writer Matt Moskovciak said the idea for this sketch was drawn for real life. He told HuffPost, “I think that everyone knows a couple that has broken up and it felt like a good thing for everyone involved.”
